Hello everyone, welcome to The India Opportunity Show where you get a front-row seat to people building India’s future. We talk about unlocking the potential of the country with founders, investors, creators, and successful leaders from different fields to bring you real-life stories and behind-the-scenes of what it takes to be at the forefront of building the India Story.
Episode 3, Season 5 of The India Opportunity Show is out now! You can watch it on YouTube or listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
India’s Ageing Economy Is Just Getting Started
India could have 350 million people over the age of 60 in the next two decades. Yet only around 1.5% of seniors live in organised senior living communities, compared with roughly 6–7% in the US.
That gap is creating a large and still underbuilt opportunity across senior housing, healthcare and care services.
On this episode of The India Opportunity Show, I sit down with Tara Singh Vachani, Vice Chairperson of Max India and Founder & Executive Chairperson of Antara Senior Care.
Tara has spent the last 15 years building a category that barely existed in India. Antara’s first community in Dehradun took seven years to sell. Today, homes there can resell for more than three times their launch price.
But this conversation goes beyond senior living.
We talk about building inside a family business, the pressure that comes with privilege, stepping down as CEO, motherhood, capital discipline and why Tara is building Antara for the long term — not for an exit.
Key Takeaways
India’s ageing economy is massively underpenetrated
Senior living is only one part of a much larger opportunity across care, healthcare and services for seniors.
Category creation takes patience
Antara’s first community took seven years to sell — proof that some markets need time more than they need capital.
Senior living is more than real estate
The real value lies in community, healthcare, safety and quality of life.
Antara is becoming a broader senior-care platform
The business now spans senior living, assisted care, transition care and consumer products.
Scale at any cost isn’t the goal
Tara would rather build sustainably than raise large amounts of capital simply to grow faster.
Knowing when to step aside matters
She speaks candidly about stepping down as CEO when the business needed different leadership.
Privilege comes with its own pressure
Tara opens up about self-doubt and the need to prove herself despite growing up within the Max Group legacy.
She isn’t building Antara for an exit
The ambition is to build an enduring institution over decades.
